Alberta has made tremendous strides in developing FASD best practice services and is a real leader in the country. Alberta has been leading development of diagnostic and assessment services in FASD; support programs in justice diversion; mentoring youth with FASD; and supporting adults with FASD. Alberta has the only provincial council in cohesively tying together all programs that work intensively with women who are pregnant and using substances. The province has recently launched FASD service networks around the province and this is the envy of the world. To consider cuts to this funding would greatly reduce Alberta’s leadership role in the country, not to mention the impacts on family, individuals and community. The province of Alberta is the only Canadian jurisdiction with a 10 year strategic plan. The funding that is in place to serve individuals with FASD is working to better diagnose and assess individuals in order to provide them accurate and reliable supports so that they are productive in society. Without this funding the risk is to continue to inappropriately and expensively serve them through justice, mental health, emergency rooms, and homeless shelters. We will continue to burn out helpful and supportive families by not being able to deliver needed supports. The funding that is in place to provide services after accurate diagnosis serves to enhance people’s abilities, encourage positive behavior and surroundings. Without this we will continue to see the number of homelessness grow, addiction services become overwhelmed and increase costs and demands on employment services. A loss of funding to FASD programming will cost millions to rebuild and in the process we could lose valuable expert resources to other jurisdictions. We will lose opportunities to completed needed research to better understand the needs of individuals with FASD that inform policy and programming. The Lakeland Centre for FASD is one of these leading services in the country that will soon celebrate 10 years of service in diagnosis and assessment services. This unique model has been acknowledged by all levels of government as a best practice. Alberta needs strong leaders in this complicated work to assist new and developing services to provide efficient and effective supports to children/adults with FASD and their families. Thank you for your continued support.
