Counsellor Temporary Maternity Coverage

The Lakeland Centre for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (LCFASD) has been providing Diagnostic, Intervention and Prevention of FASD services since 2000. We are known across the province and nationwide for our novel, non-judgmental, supportive services.

Our Vision: We envision a region with no new FASD births and where currently affected individuals are well supported.

Our Mission: To establish and ensure that accurate information about FASD, and effective prevention, diagnosis and support services are available in the region.

About the Role: The Counsellor is a member of the LCFASD team with specific direction in intervention and supports. Counsellors work with people experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties to help them bring about effective change and/or enhance their wellbeing. You’ll help people with issues such as addictions, depression, anxiety, stress, loss and relationship difficulties that are affecting their lives. You will encourage clients to discuss emotions and experiences, help clients develop coping strategies to address their needs and guide them through individual goals. This position will be until October 31, 2027.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 counselling to LCFASD clients and their families throughout Lakeland service area.
  • Facilitate client and caregiver group sessions and provide support.
  • Communicate and work in collaboration with key stakeholders within the Lakeland service area.
  • Provide FASD education/training.
  • Travel to communities in the Lakeland region.

What you bring to LCFASD

Qualifications

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in social work or equivalent.
  • Active registration in good standing with a regulatory college in Alberta.
  • Minimum three years of direct community-based experience working with high-risk populations.
  • Knowledge and ability to implement Addiction Counselling theories, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Must be culturally competent.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining a high degree of confidentiality and setting appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Verbal and written communication skills, ranging from individual case management to collaborating with community agencies and speak in front of large groups.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office including Outlook and Word.

Assets

  • A master’s degree in a Human Services field will be considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting individuals in a community-based capacity and understanding of issues impacting individuals who experience poverty, trauma, homelessness, problematic substance use, and/or concurrent disorders.
  • Experiencing working with First Nation, Inuit or Métis peoples considered an asset.
  • Experiencing providing emotional support to individuals from a strengths-based approach considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of FASD will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practice principles will be considered an asset.

Training

The following training will be considered an asset (training will be provided):

  • Motivational Interviewing.
  • CPR/First Aid.
  • ASIST.
  • Addictions & Mental Health training considered an asset.

Conditions of Employment

  • Criminal Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector Screening).
  • Child Intervention Record Check.
  • A current Class 5 driver’s license, satisfactory driver’s abstract and good insurance history is necessary to be insured by LCFASD.
  • This position will require driving and use of personal vehicle when the LCFASD vehicle is not available.
  • Proof of third-party insurance in the amount of 2 million dollars is required.

Working Conditions

Caseload: Clients will be referred from in house programming and accepted from community organizations

Travel: will be required to travel to all communities in the LCFASD area.

Administrative: Complete required case management, LCFASD and government reporting in a timely manner.

Potential for exposure to blood, bodily fluids and/or other communicable diseases

Possible exposure to clients with behaviors such as inappropriate language, verbal and physical aggression

Benefits of working with the LCFASD

Salary: Hourly wage starting between $28.28 – $31.00.  Hourly wage will be determined by education and experience.

Schedule:

  • Hours of work are flexible within a one-month time frame: 36.25 hours per week not to exceed 145 hours per 4-week period.
  • Hours may be outside of LCFASD office hours (8:15-4:30pm)
  • Overtime may be required.
